Herniated/Bulging Discs and Yoga Therapy

Herniated and Bulging Discs and Yoga Therapy

What is a Herniated and Bulging Disc?

Herniated and bulging discs in the spine can cause pain and discomfort. The issue can be chronic, meaning it can last for more than 3 months. In that case the pain could start to hinder our daily activities and decrease enjoyment of things we love to do, or even daily activities such as walking.

The vertebra in the spine sits between small, spongy discs. When the discs are healthy, they act as shock absorbers for the spine. So when the body moves, the discs can maintain flexibility. When the outer disc (Annulus Fibrosus) ruptures due to wear and tear, the material inside of the disc (Nucleus Pulposus) leaks out, which can cause a pinched nerve if it starts to irritate a nerve nearby. The pain is referred to as radicular pain or nerve root pain, meaning it leads to pain felt in other parts of the body. The pain can happen from the neck down to the arm or low back down to the leg. A pinched nerve causing leg pain is called sciatica pain.

A herniated disc in the thoracic is rare, but it would generally cause discomfort in the chest and upper back region. If the disc ruptures and compresses the spinal cord, it can cause Myelopathy, an injury to the spinal cord. This condition can cause issues with balance, performing daily activities, and incontinence. Physical therapy, massage therapy, manual adjustments, steroid injections, and surgery have helped treat this condition.

Yoga Therapy for Herniated and Bulging Discs

Yoga Therapy has come into the picture recently as an alternative to treating pain due to herniated or bulging discs. The focus is on working with the injury safely. It’s dealing with the way the mind perceives the pain. This holistic body/mind approach allows the recovery process to be smoother and easier to manage. Yoga Therapy will help to avoid taking heavily prescribed pain medications that may lead to addiction to opiates.
